DUTIES: The President and CEO is the senior staff member of Mental Health America. Among the duties of the President and CEO are the following:

Serve as the chief spokesperson for Mental Health America; represent and explain Mental Health America and its programs and policy positions before a wide array of audiences including the Mental Health America affiliate field, local, state and national elected and appointed decision makers, other national organizations in and outside of the mental health field, the media, and current and potential funders; ensure the continued financial strength and stability of the organization; supervise the Mental Health America staff; supervise all Mental Health America programs and services; collaborate with MHA affiliates and with governmental and private organizations (profit and nonprofit) in all areas related to the mission of Mental Health America.

REQUIREMENTS: A high level of motivation; results-orientated; demonstrated proficiency in advocacy; management and team-building skills; a bachelor's degree; broadly based mental health and human service administration and policy experience; ability to apply the principles of public health to mental health; proven experience and measurable success in fund development; dedication to cultural and linguistic competence; knowledge about mental and substance use disorders; significant experience in non-profit management, preferably related to mental health; full support of the concepts of consumer empowerment and recovery; acknowledgement of the importance of family and consumer voices; knowledge about the science of prevention in the field of mental health; strong advocacy skills, including experience working with federal legislators and giving testimony at congressional hearings; strong public speaking skills with the ability to communicate effectively; successful experience in working with public and private profit and nonprofit organizations; and experience successfully managing organizations of similar or larger size.

Executive Director - Mental Health America of Kentucky 

Anticipating the retirement of long-time staff member Sheriall Cunningham at the end of April, Mental Health America of Kentucky, a sixty-year-old, forward-looking nonprofit based in Louisville but with statewide reach, announces an opening for full-time Executive Director beginning May 1, 2012.

A person qualified for the job will have a college degree in a human service field and post-graduate education or experience in health care or nonprofit management. Responsibilities include communications, marketing, advocacy, fundraising, grant-writing, and project implementation as well as day-to-day management of a small office including keeping records and accounts. An applicant will be expected to demonstrate skills related to the position's responsibilities. Experience as both a leader and a collaborator is vital. Statewide travel is required.

Executive Director - Mental Health America of Dutchess County

Mental Health America of Dutchess County is seeking an Executive Director who will promote mental health through the development and management of programs providing direct mental health services,
advocacy, education and prevention and to ensure that funding is available through sound fiscal management; and who also has knowledge of the trends, developments and research in the field to provide leadership to the organization and to the community. MHA of Dutchess is a 6.5 million dollar agency serving 3000 adults and children and their families with mental health needs as well as many more individuals in the community through training and education programs. The services include targeted case management, homeless services, rehabilitation services, programs for children and families and community education. MHA of Dutchess is an affiliate of national Mental Health America of Dutchess and Mental Health Association of New York State.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will:

• Assist and provide staff support to the Board of Directors and
committees in understanding their mission, charges and responsibilities.
• Design and implement an organizational structure and governance to accomplish MHA's goals.
• Provide leadership and fiscal oversight of all areas of the agency and be familiar with auditing and cash flow projections.
• Work with the Finance Committee to hire a competent Auditing firm which will meet all of the regulatory requirements for funders and the IRS.
• Select, supervise and evaluate the capability of senior staff.
• Represent MHA on governmental agencies and community coalitions, task forces, and work groups, and sub?committees that pertain to mental health issues.
• Impact the administration of mental health policy and programs by monitoring and influencing administrative decisions and activities of public and private agencies at the State and local levels.
• Assure that the staff and board are well informed regarding the
activities of the agency.
• Promote and collaborate with other community mental health agencies in the County and in NYS.
• Effectively communicate to constituencies about relevant legislative activity regarding vital interests of the MHA.
• Take appropriate advocacy action representing the agency's
perspective through advocacy activities, attendance at hearings, letter campaigns, collaborative undertakings, etc.

The CEO should have the following experience and qualifications:

• At a minimum, the candidate should have a Master's degree in social work or a related field, plus at least 10 years of experience in a not for profit or public sector human services agency, including at least 5 years at a senior managerial level.
• Experience in the mental health and recovery field is required, including familiarity with evidenced based practices and outcome measurements in service delivery.
• A strong personal commitment to serving consumer needs through the effective recruitment, retention, training, and supervision of staff.
• Experience as a collaborator and consensus builder to work effectively with culturally, socially and economically diverse groups, and collaboration with other organizations in the human services network, locally, regionally and nationally.
• A thorough understanding of the mental health and recovery community and funding sources and reporting requirement, including, for example, knowledge of health homes, etc.
• An understanding of legislative and governmental process and its impact on the agency.
• Extensive experience with an understanding of not for profit funding, grant and contract writing and submission, budget preparation, over all fiscal management and audit procedures and general administration.
• Knowledge of Total Quality Improvement Planning and Corporate Compliance.
• A keen understanding and appreciation for informational technology, social networking, and social entrepreneurship.
• Familiarity with the National and State MHA is desirable

Superintendent - Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo

The Colorado Department of Human Services is seeking a Superintendent to lead and manage a 438-bed psychiatric hospital in Pueblo, Colorado. The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo (CMHIP) is the State's sole forensic hospital responsible for the care and treatment of individuals referred for competency evaluations, restoration to competency, and determined not guilty by reason of insanity. In addition to the hospital's 294 forensic beds, the hospital operates 144 civil beds, including adult, adolescent, geriatric and substance abuse (dual diagnosis) programs. CMHIP is accredited by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, accredited by The Joint Commission and certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Superintendent will lead the hospital towards becoming the best state psychiatric hospital in the nation. This senior level position leads staff and manages fiscal resources to ensure that the hospital provides superior quality treatment and services in a patient centered hospital environment. The Superintendent oversees an annual operating budget of $69 million and 928 FTE. This position coordinates and collaborates with other CDHS leaders, other state and local governmental agencies, community treatment providers, and the courts.

This position is in the Senior Executive Service (SES), which is a performance-based pay plan reserved for senior-level management positions responsible for relatively large or important segments of a principal department. Employees in SES agree to and sign a contract, which expires and is renegotiated annually. A successful physician candidate would be employed by CDHS through a contract the University of Colorado at Denver School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. This appointment is a non-classified, at will appointment.

Salary:

  • $6,662 - $12,073 per month (Senior Executive Service)
  • A physician with relevant administrative experience may start at $15,000 per month or greater, depending on qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in behavioral health or hospital administration.
  • Two years managing a psychiatric hospital or inpatient psychiatric program
  • Two years supervising administrative and clinical professionals and/or supervisors

Highly Desirable:
The successful candidate will have a Master's, Doctorate or M.D. and five or more years experience managing an inpatient psychiatric hospital with inpatient forensic services.

The Mental Health Association of Montgomery County (MHA) is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial mental health or human service professional to serve as its next president/CEO. This position offers the opportunity to build on existing strengths and chart a new strategic direction for this highly respected nonprofit that provides public education, advocacy, social action, and innovative mental health programs.

A private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Rockville that was founded in 1957, MHA promotes mental wellness and supports those with mental illness by sponsoring and implementing advocacy, education and community service programs.
