Current Internship Opportunities
We are currently accepting applications for the Spring Semester (beginning January 2012) and the summer semester (May 2012) of next year. Mental Health America is always accepting applications from prospective interns throughout the year (Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters). No relocation or housing costs will be provided. If you live away from Alexandria, VA, but want to intern or volunteer, you should take a look at the local Mental Health America affiliate - many of them have strong internship programs with great opportunities. Our positions are also unpaid.
All interns are to work at least 10-15 hours per week. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to the interns@mentalhealthamerica.net. Web and Technology Intern
Mental Health America is recruiting a Web and Technology Intern for the office in Alexandria, VA. This position is ideal for students interested in pursuing careers in web design, new media, communications, and graphic design. Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates are all encouraged to apply. This position is available year round.
We take pride in considering our internships ‘hands-on' learning experiences. If you intern at our office, you'll get a wide range of experience and access to staff members who can help coach you and teach you practical applications for all the things you learned in school. As a Web and Technology Intern, you will be actively involved in designing and updating content as well as creating and implementing creative web strategies.
When you intern here, you'll learn how to...
- Work with Content Management Systems (we use Farcry) to update information
- Create widgets, buttons, and graphics for web design
- Use a Contact Management System (we use SalesForce) including administrator experience in designing custom fields
- Work with Online Marketing platforms (we use Convio) to create e-mails, e-cards, interactive web pages
- Learn how design teams work with other departments and external vendors to create a cohesive online presence
- Other duties as assigned
You should...
- Have an interest in web design, communications, graphic design, or marketing
- Have basic HTML and/or graphic design experience. Knowledge of CSS and ColdFusion is a great addition but not necessary
- Produce high quality, error free work
- Communicate efficiently and professionally

Development Intern
Located in Alexandria, Virginia, Mental Health America seeks an energetic development intern to assist with special projects and day-to-day operations. Ideal candidates will have an interest in non-profits and fundraising. The internship will entail building donor relations, assisting with gift entry, mailings, and conducting internet research as needed. Special projects include development of online fundraising activities and foundation and major gift research. Candidates must be MS Office proficient and have strong internet research skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a professional phone presence, are desired. Mental Health America is recruiting a Public Education Intern for work in Alexandria, VA. This position is great for anyone who is interested in a career in health education, public health, or non-profits. This position is open to graduate students and recent graduates only. A stipend may be available based on hours worked.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Cataloguing existing public education materials
- Attending and taking notes for meetings
- Conducting research
- Updating web content for accuracy and streamlining it for ease of navigation
- Communicating passionately and effectively about major mental and public health issues
- Writing copy and designing layouts for brochures, fact sheets and/or flyers
- Other duties as assigned
You should:
- Have an interest in mental health, writing, or helping others. An interest in public health is critical
- Have strong writing skills
- Be familiar with basic Microsoft Office
- Produce high quality, error free work
- Communicate efficiently and professionally

This position is available to graduate students and recent graduates only. This internship requires a minimum of 14 hours a week. A stipend will be provided based on the number of hours worked.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Cataloguing existing public policy materials
- Attending and taking notes for meetings
- Conducting research
- Providing daily technical assistance to constituents with policy queries
- Updating web content for accuracy
- Communicating passionately and effectively about major mental health policy issues
- Other duties as assigned
You should:
- Have an interest in mental health or helping others
- Have strong writing skills
- Be familiar with basic Microsoft Office
- Produce high quality, error free work
- Communicate efficiently and professionally
